Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts: Music Appreciation Courses, 2009-2010 Season

I am proud to announce the following courses for the upcoming season at the MCMA. This will be my seventh season teaching there, and I hope that this new lineup includes at least one course that will appeal to everyone!

THE HEART OF TCHAIKOVSKY

Co-presented by Creative Retirement, the Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
Russia’s Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular of all composers – but how well do we really know him? This enriching and thought-provoking course gives a fully rounded portrait. It samples every type of music he wrote, from piano pieces, songs and chamber works to symphonies, concertos, operas and ballets. His letters, and reminiscences by people who knew him, provide additional insight. Special highlights include video presentations of Swan Lake, starring the legendary duo of Dame Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, and his orchestral masterpiece, the Sixth Symphony, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.
